Mission:

A translator’s main duty is reproducing content from a source language in a target language. Translators have to carefully adapt their translations to the needs of the target audience, such as language level or choice of vocabulary.

Skills :

Translators need to be experts in their native language and have a good knowledge of one or more foreign languages. They also need to be familiar with detailed cultural aspects of their target audiences.
Translators know how to use CAT tool, or computer aided translation tools, and translation memories. Two well-known CAT tools are SDL Trados Studio and OmegaT.

Qualities :

Translators must be able to work independently and maintain high levels of quality in their work.

Starting salary :

1,500 -1,900 € / month

Localizer

Mission:

As with translators, localizers translate content from a source language to a target language. They adapt the content of websites, software, and other multimedia products to for consumption by another culture. Some common considerations include reading direction and the symbolism of images and colors.

Skills :

Localizers need to be experts in their native language and have a good knowledge of one or more foreign languages. They know the target culture well, and have a good command of the necessary tools and software. Localizers generally use software such as Trados Studio, OmegaT, Photoshop, and Flash.

Qualities :

Localizers must be able to work independently and have good analytical skills.

Starting salary :

1,500 -1,900 € / month

For my second year in the CAWEB Master’s, I had the opportunity to do an apprenticeship in a translation agency. The Trados course I had in the first year gave me the basic skills to understand the software. Without these courses I would not have gotten my apprenticeship. In addition to translation, I also do with project management. The job as translator draws together many of the fields that I like most: foreign languages, editing, project management, and product optimization.
