Terminology

General presentation of the theories and problems of monolingual and multilingual terminology.

Research methodology and translation tools

Technical elements to conduct data research (defining a research framework or project, knowing the key places and tools).

Writing a bibliography, and knowing the material and logistic environment of the translator.

  • Learning the basis of the theory of terminology
  • Learning the basis of translatology
  • Learning the methods of scientific work and bibliographical research

Multimedia Creation

The courses in this teaching unit are an introduction to the use of multimedia content creation and computer aided translation software. Students will obtain basic knowledge in web technology and tools, as well as in printed publication.

Current software in use: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, SDL Trados, OmegaT.

Foreign Languages

Improve the linguistic skills of students in two foreign languages as well as in French both written and oral. The oral expression work aims at an active use of the language. Students are required to organize their thoughts and defend their point of view during debating and discussion sessions.

Students have to chose two out of three modules offered for each language:

LE (written language) - 24 hours

LO (oral language) - 18 heures

Specialized translation (prose) - 18 hours

Skills:

  • Translation of complex texts written in foreign languages into French, or to summarize them in French.
  • Conversing on complex and varied topics in a foreign language.

Professionalization

The ability assessment course helps students know where they stand concerning the knowledge and skills acquired during their training and their experiences outside the university. It can help them clarify their future professional project.

The oral expression course goes together with the writing of a professional project file and deals more particularly with the following aspects:

Defining specifications.

Analyzing the context in which the request is made.

Carrying out information research.

Skills:

  • Being able to take into account the representations of others
  • Linking academic and business cultures
  • Writing an academic file, how to write for business purposes
  • Presenting oneself at a job interview

Languages and Tools for the web

This UE is a refresher course that refreshes the students memory of the technical IT skills learned in the first year.

It allows students who haven’t followed the M1 Caweb to acquire the necessary knowledge for the rest of the year and to learn the structure of certain programming languages. The students who have assisted to the M1 have the occasion of consolidating their knowledge.

Skills:

  • Understanding the programming languages used for website creation.
  • Know how to use the main WHTML tags and attributes and control the layout using cascading style sheets (CSS).
  • Learning the basis of SEO.
  • Understand the basic operation of a web server and learn the basics of PHP.
  • Master the graphics software for image editing, website templates and illustration.

Website Creation and Management

This UE deals with the methodology, design and the management of multilingual websites. It gives an introduction to the use of PHP language to generate web page content dynamically from a database. It also presents the basic and fundamental concepts of databases and the SQL queries language, which makes it possible to create and manage databases. An introduction to XML/XSL encoding is also part of the programme.

Skills:

  • Designing a dynamic website in the PHP environment following web standards, clearly separating the editorial content in XHTML format from the layout using cascading style sheets (CSS).
  • Integrating elements of text, graphic design and multimedia with a precise layout, controlled by cascading style sheets (CSS).
  • Designing websites that are adapted to an intercultural situation and take the future management into account.
  • Creating accessible websites which follow web standards.
  • Learning and mastering the techniques and tools for efficient website management.
  • Understanding the basis and advantages of XML: Students will be able to create XML files and their DTD, to present XML code with a cascading style sheet (CSS) and to apply XSL transformations in order to produce XHTML code which can be read by any browser.
  • Understanding the different XSL components in order to transform XML data into a web publication or into pdf format using XSL-FO language.
  • Knowing the fundamental concepts of databases.
  • Mastering the techniques of database creation and management, in a client-server setup
  • Using PHP language to generate web page content dynamically from a database.
  • Knowing the main SQL commands as well as the MySQL administration interface.
  • Programming SQL database queries using PHP language, in order to then represent the data in XHTML.
  • Discover the basics of community management.

These courses include an introduction to localization as well as a presentation of the methodology, tools and intercultural aspects of localization. Case studies and practical exercises complement these courses.

Image Processing

In this teaching unit, students will obtain solid basic knowledge in image analysis and in the field of visual communication. They will create and process images, more particularly Flash animations. Flash courses include a theoretical and a practical part.

  • Mastering the fundamental concepts of multimedia ergonomics.
  • Designing an appropriate and efficient interface.
  • Knowing the most common image, sound and video formats.

Project Management and Professional Project

Practical courses and lectures on the management of a multimedia project.

Exercises on a project management software.

Internship and Training Report

Three to six months internship in a company. Writing of a training report. Oral examination.

Through an apprenticeship: during a year's time, the student works in a company on days when he or she doen not have university classes.

Through a six-months part-time internship or paid employement: The internship or employment must begin in February.

Through a three to four months full-time internship or paid employement starting from the 1st of June

Skills:

  • Applying the different skills acquired in a professional context.
  • Preparing a critical report and an oral examination of the professional experience acquired in a company.
